Description

A bristle brush is the laboratory polishing tool used on acrylic dentures and metal surfaces, mounted in the straight handpiece. The brush does not polish on its own: it works with pumice or polishing paste and acts as the carrier that takes the abrasive to the surface and into recesses. Because the bristle tuft reaches interdental areas, denture base margins and anatomical recesses that felt wheels and buffs cannot enter, it is the tool of choice for the first stage of polishing. Work at low to medium speed with light pressure; at high speed the brush heats up and can dull or thin the acrylic surface. Cleaning the brush between cases, and ideally keeping separate brushes, prevents polishing medium being carried from one patient's work to another. A brush whose bristles have splayed, shortened or hardened no longer contacts the surface evenly and should be replaced.
