Description

A carborundum separating disc is the thin bonded-abrasive disc used in the dental laboratory to cut metal, acrylic and plaster. Mounted on a mandrel and run in a straight or contra-angle handpiece, it should cut with its edge under light pressure and in short contacts. Loading the disc sideways or holding it at an angle causes it to shatter, so the cut must be followed in a straight line. Continuous contact heats both the disc and the workpiece, and working without pauses can leave heat damage on acrylic and cast metal in particular. A separating disc is a cutting tool, not a finishing instrument; the cut surface is refined afterwards with burs and finishing discs. Eye protection is mandatory when using discs, and any disc that is cracked or chipped at the edge must not be used.
