Description
A chest corset applies compression all around the rib cage to support the sternum. The sternal region is reinforced with terry cloth — the area where the incision lies after open heart surgery and where support is needed most. Made of flexible, breathable elastic fabric, it does not trap sweat and can be worn through the day during recovery. It is used on medical advice after coronary (bypass) surgery, in rib and sternal fractures, after thoracic surgery and trauma, and following breast surgery. Size is set by chest circumference — the right size matters so the corset gives the intended support during coughing and movement. Where more rigid support is required, a steel-reinforced chest corset is considered. The operating surgeon should set the wearing period.
