Description

Wooden wedges are single-use interdental aids used together with a matrix band when restoring Class II cavities in posterior teeth. Placed in the interdental space they do two jobs at once: they press the matrix band firmly against the cervical margin of the cavity, preventing the restorative material from extending gingivally as an overhang, and they separate the teeth temporarily by roughly the thickness of the matrix, so that a natural contact point results once the band is removed. The wedges have a triangular section tapering to the tip and are colour-coded by size; the size must match the width of the space, as a wedge that is too thick traumatises the papilla while one that is too thin fails to seat the band. The wood swells slightly with moisture, which improves adaptation. The wedge is removed and discarded after the procedure and is not sterilised for reuse. It should be introduced from whichever side of the embrasure is wider.
