Description
A dental flask is the metal mould in which a waxed-up denture is invested and acrylic is packed. The waxed denture is invested in plaster in the lower half, the upper half is closed and filled, and after the wax is eliminated with boiling water the resulting space is packed with acrylic. The side lugs that return the two halves to exactly the same position are critical to preserving the vertical dimension after pressing; plaster left in the lug seats stops the flask closing fully and the denture comes out high. After packing, the flask goes into a flask clamp so it stays under pressure through polymerisation. The cast metal body tolerates repeated heating and cooling, and keeping the inner surfaces flat and clean is what keeps a flask closing accurately over the years. Applying a separator before investing stops plaster bonding to the flask wall and makes deflasking easier.
