Description

The finger spreader is the key instrument of the lateral condensation technique in root canal obturation. After the master gutta-percha point is seated, the spreader is introduced alongside it and advanced under controlled pressure to compact the gutta-percha against the canal wall; withdrawing it with a rotation opens the space into which an accessory point is placed. The cycle is repeated until the canal is filled, and the seal of the obturation depends largely on the quality of that compaction. The force applied must stay controlled: excessive or sudden pressure risks fracture, particularly in roots with thin walls. Choosing the right length and taper so the instrument follows the curvature of the canal is what decides whether the apical region can be reached. The stainless steel body is autoclavable, and any instrument with a bent or blunted tip should be replaced.
