Description

The H-file, or Hedström file, is an endodontic hand instrument machined by grinding helical flutes into a tapered round blank. Its cutting edges face backwards, so the file cuts only on the pull stroke — which makes it noticeably faster at removing dentine than a K-file. Its main uses are planing the canal wall, flaring the canal orifice and removing old root filling material. The instruments are sized to the ISO colour-coded numbering system, and the handle colour lets the operator pick a size quickly during treatment. Because the cutting flutes reduce the core diameter, an H-file is more fragile than a K-file of the same size: it should not be rotated within the canal and must not be forced, particularly in curved canals. Every file should be inspected before use and any instrument with unwound flutes or a bend discarded. Copious irrigation during instrumentation prevents dentine debris packing between the flutes and binding the file.
