Description
The amalgam carrier is a plunger-operated hand instrument for delivering mixed amalgam into a cavity in controlled amounts. The hollow barrel is filled with amalgam, the tip is positioned at the cavity and the plunger pushes the material straight into place, so the amalgam never contacts the operator's glove or the surrounding tissues. Amalgam is placed in small increments rather than in one mass, and each increment is packed with an amalgam condenser; using the two instruments together is what produces a void-free restoration with good marginal adaptation. Barrel and plunger must be cleaned after every use, otherwise set residue seizes the mechanism and the instrument stops working. Amalgam waste should be collected in an amalgam waste container in line with environmental requirements. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
