Description
Crown and plate shears are hardened-blade scissors used to cut stainless steel crowns, matrix bands and baseplate or wax plates. Unlike soft-tissue scissors they are built for metal, so the two types should never be substituted for one another and are best kept in separate sets. The straight blade handles linear cuts and shortening plate margins, while the curved blade trims a crown margin to follow the gingival contour — adapting preformed steel crowns in paediatric dentistry needs both movements. Any sharp burr left at the cut edge must be smoothed with a stone and polished before the crown is seated. Shears with misaligned blades crush the metal instead of cutting it and deform the margin, so cutting performance should be checked regularly. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
