Description
The modelling spatula is the double-ended hand instrument used for wax work in the dental prosthetics laboratory. One end is designed to carry and shape wax and the other to carve away excess and finish the surface, so work can continue without swapping instruments. Its main uses are forming occlusal surfaces and axial contours in crown and bridge wax-ups, shaping wax rims in removable prosthetics, and adding wax during tooth set-up. The blade is heated in a flame, and the temperature directly affects the quality of the work: an over-heated blade scorches the wax, leaves soot and induces internal stress in the pattern, which later shows up as a fit error in the casting. A blade that is too cool drags the wax rather than cutting it and leaves marks on the surface. Cleaning wax residue from the blade after work is necessary for fresh wax to adhere properly next time.
