Description

The wax spatula is the basic laboratory instrument heated in a flame so that its hot blade melts and carries wax. Its main uses are building wax rims on a baseplate, adding wax around the teeth during set-up, and sealing joints between wax sections; clinically it is used to adjust bite registration wax in the mouth. The decisive factor in use is holding the blade at the right temperature: an over-heated blade scorches the wax, leaves soot and induces stress within the pattern, while a blade that is too cool drags the wax instead of cutting it and spoils the surface. Working by letting wax run from the very tip of the blade gives controlled placement when adding material. Clearing wax residue from the blade after each use helps fresh wax adhere properly and prevents voids at joints. A thermally insulating handle makes long modelling sessions more comfortable to work through.
