Description
The K-file is an endodontic hand instrument produced by twisting a square or triangular section wire to form spiral cutting edges. Because it can be used with both a push-pull filing motion and a quarter-turn reaming motion, it covers everything from negotiating the canal path to enlarging it in stages. It is available in stainless steel and nickel-titanium; NiTi versions follow the canal path better in curved roots. A K-file is more flexible and more fracture-resistant than an H-file of the same size, which is why initial access and canal exploration are usually carried out with K-files. Instruments are sized to the ISO colour-coded system and should be used in sequence without skipping sizes, as skipping leads to ledging in the canal. Working length should be fixed with a rubber stop and checked on every file. Any instrument that is bent, unwound or stretched carries a fracture risk and should be discarded, and copious irrigation should be used to prevent debris packing.
