Description
A mixing bowl is the flexible rubber vessel in which alginate, dental plaster and similar model materials are mixed in the surgery and the laboratory. Its tapered body and smooth inner surface let the mix be pressed against the wall and folded with a spatula so the powder wets through completely, and a homogeneous mix directly affects both the detail quality of an impression and the surface finish of a cast. Large bowls are chosen for pouring several models at once or for the volume of alginate a full-size tray needs; a large mix made in a small bowl spills over the rim and cannot be worked properly. Once the material has set, flexing the bowl outwards releases the residue in one piece, so no scraping is needed. Plaster left on the inner surface accelerates the set of the next mix and roughens its surface, so the bowl should be cleaned thoroughly after every use. A flat base helps keep the bowl from sliding on the bench while mixing.
