Description
A lentulo is the helical instrument used before obturation to distribute root canal sealer evenly along the whole length of the canal. Mounted in a contra-angle and rotated slowly in the direction that drives paste inward, it carries sealer down towards the apical region instead of leaving it heaped at the canal orifice, which makes seating the gutta-percha point easier. The instrument should be placed in the canal before rotation is started, used a few millimetres short of the working length, and never allowed to bind against the canal wall; a lentulo that binds or is run too fast fractures easily, and a separated fragment can change the treatment plan. Because the spiral is prone to fatigue, any instrument that has straightened, unwound or bent should be discarded. The student pack is a practical unit for those starting endodontic exercises at faculty.
