Description
A spirit lamp is the alcohol burner used for small-scale heating in the dental laboratory and at the chair. It is used to warm waxing spatulas and wax knives during modelling, to soften wax, and chairside to bring impression compound to working consistency. The metal body gives it weight against tipping, and the cap both extinguishes the flame and stops the alcohol evaporating while the lamp is idle. The lamp must stand on a stable, non-flammable surface, must never be left burning unattended, and no flammable liquid such as alcohol or monomer should be kept beside it. Fuel is added only once the flame is out and the lamp has cooled; pouring alcohol onto a hot body is dangerous. As the wick shortens the flame becomes irregular, and the replaceable wick keeps the lamp in service for a long time.
