Description
An occludator is a simple articulator that holds upper and lower plaster casts opposed at a fixed vertical dimension and opens and closes on a single axis. The casts are mounted to the upper and lower arms with plaster, and because the hinge allows only opening and closing, the closing relationship is maintained in one position. It is used for work where excursive movement does not need to be assessed: single-unit crown and bridge waxing, denture repair and relining, and the fabrication of removable orthodontic plates. Unlike an adjustable articulator it cannot reproduce lateral or protrusive jaw movement, so it is not the instrument of choice for extensive occlusal reconstruction. In exchange, it is light and quick to mount, which makes it practical to run several cases at once in the laboratory. Minimal play in the hinge is the key quality point: it determines whether the casts return to exactly the same closing position each time, and an occludator with a loose joint can produce a waxed occlusal surface that does not fit in the mouth.
