Description
Gutta-percha points are the thermoplastic filling material used at the obturation stage of root canal treatment. Composed of gutta-percha, zinc oxide and radiopacifiers, the material can be shaped under heat and pressure so that it adapts to the canal wall. Points are made in ISO sizes and colour codes corresponding to root canal file numbers; the master cone is selected to match the apical preparation size and fitted so that it gives tug-back at working length. In lateral condensation, accessory cones are placed alongside the master cone with a spreader until the canal is filled; in warm vertical condensation the material is heated and compacted with pluggers. Gutta-percha does not seal on its own and must always be used together with a root canal sealer. Because the material is radiopaque, the length and density of the fill can be assessed on a review radiograph. Points should be stored cool: warm gutta-percha becomes brittle and can bend or break as it is carried into the canal.
