Description
A matrix band is the thin steel strip that temporarily takes the place of the missing proximal wall when a Class II cavity is restored in a posterior tooth. Perforated bands of this type are threaded onto a crab-shaped (Ivory type) matrix retainer through their holes, and the retainer is tightened to draw the band around the tooth. The band does more than hold the restorative material in the cavity: it also defines the contour of the proximal surface that will contact the neighbouring tooth, so how well it follows the tooth's contour directly affects the quality of the finished contact. The band must be supported at the cervical margin with an interdental wedge; without one, restorative material extends gingivally and forms an overhang. The product is supplied in two-hole and three-hole options, and which one suits depends on the geometry of the retainer in use. Bands are single use — one that has been deformed or creased during tightening should be discarded.
