Description

A disc mandrel is the carrier that fits into the straight handpiece of a laboratory micromotor and holds cutting or polishing discs. The disc is placed over the mandrel and clamped with the screw, a fixation that stops it slipping at high speed. Different discs can be swapped quickly on the same mandrel for trimming acrylic, cutting plaster, separating metal and polishing. It matters that the disc seats fully against the mandrel body: a disc mounted off axis runs out of true, marks the surface and is far more likely to shatter. As the body and the thread wear, the disc begins to work loose, so a mandrel that no longer grips should be replaced. Protective eyewear is mandatory when working with discs.
