Description

The triangular wax spatula is the basic instrument for wax work in the dental prosthetics laboratory. Its flat, pointed triangular blade heats in a flame and can both melt and carry wax and smooth the surface afterwards. Typical uses are sealing joints while building a wax rim on a baseplate, adding wax around the teeth during set-up, and making corrections after a try-in. The triangular blade reaches narrow embrasures and tooth necks, which is why it is favoured for detail work during set-up. Controlling blade temperature matters: an over-heated blade scorches the wax, leaves soot and alters the wax's dimensional behaviour, while a blade that is too cool drags the wax instead of cutting it. Wax residue should be cleaned from the blade after each use, otherwise old wax prevents fresh wax from adhering and leaves a void at the joint. A thermally insulating handle reduces hand fatigue over long working sessions.
