Description
Etching gel is the phosphoric acid preparation used to condition enamel and dentine before an adhesive is applied for a composite restoration. It creates micro-roughness on the enamel surface, and the adhesive that flows into and polymerises within that texture forms the mechanical bond the restoration relies on. The semi-gel consistency keeps the material on the area it was placed rather than running onto neighbouring tissue, which matters whenever only a limited area is to be etched. Etching times differ for enamel and dentine and are set by the instructions for the adhesive system in use; exceeding them can over-demineralise dentine in particular. The gel must be rinsed away completely with plenty of water, and the etched enamel must not be contaminated afterwards. Avoid contact with soft tissue, protect the patient's eyes, and keep the syringe capped and stored cool when not in use.
