Description
Hearing aid batteries use zinc-air technology: peeling the coloured tab off the cell lets air in and starts the chemical reaction. That is why you should remove the tab only when you are about to use the battery — once removed, the cell keeps discharging even if the tab is put back. Waiting about a minute after removing the tab before fitting the cell lets it saturate fully with air and improves its performance. Battery numbers vary by device (10, 13, 312 and 675 are the common ones) and are distinguished by colour code; when buying spares, check the number printed on your current battery or your device's manual, as the wrong number will not physically fit. Store cells at room temperature in a dry place with their tabs still on; refrigeration is not recommended, since condensation damages the cell. Button cells are seriously hazardous if swallowed; keep them away from children and pets, and take used cells to an appropriate collection point.
