Description
An inflatable splint set is first aid equipment for immobilising a suspected fracture at the scene, carried by ambulances, workplace and sports-ground first aid teams and rescue vehicles. The splint is slipped over the limb, zipped closed and inflated with the hand pump; air pressure holds the injured area with a rigidity comparable to a cast. It can be used for fractures at or below the knee and elbow joints, and also helps immobilise a limb in cases of heavy bleeding or swelling. The material is durable vinyl PVC, closed with a zipper and an airtight valve. The set's most practical feature is that it is radiolucent: once the patient reaches hospital, X-rays can be taken without removing the splint, so the limb does not have to be moved again. The case holds six separate splints covering the foot, leg, hand, arm and calf, plus a hand pump. Over-inflating a splint can restrict circulation, so check the colour and pulse of the limb after applying it.
