Description
The Pavlik harness is an orthosis used as first-line treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip in infants. It holds the legs flexed at the hip and abducted so the femoral head stays correctly seated in the acetabulum, with the aim that the joint develops in that position as the baby grows. The harness is made from purpose-woven cotton straps, with fibre padding at the shoulder and foot contact areas — important for preventing pressure marks, given that the harness is worn around the clock. Seven infinitely adjustable plastic buckles and hook-and-loop foot straps make it easy to fit and to readjust as the baby grows. Size is chosen by the knee-to-knee span: Small 14–18 cm, Medium 18–22 cm, Large 22–26 cm and X-Large 26–30 cm. One point is critical: the strap settings must be determined only by the treating doctor. An incorrect angle can leave the treatment ineffective or lead to problems with the blood supply to the femoral head. For daily care, keep the skin clean and dry, check under the straps for redness every day, and keep every follow-up appointment.
