Description
Synthetic casting tape is an alternative to traditional plaster of Paris, made from a polyester or fibreglass knit impregnated with polyurethane resin. Wetting it starts the resin curing, and it reaches its final rigidity within minutes. It has two main advantages over plaster: it achieves the same rigidity in a far lighter structure, so patients casted for long periods suffer less fatigue and muscle loss; and its high X-ray transparency lets the fracture line be assessed on follow-up films without opening the cast. Micro-perforations in the knit allow the skin to breathe, which reduces sweating and odour. It leaves no dust on removal, so the itching associated with plaster dust does not occur. Synthetic casting tape must be applied wearing gloves and with correct wrapping technique; the resin sticks to skin and clothing and cannot be removed once cured. Wrapping tension matters — a cast applied too tightly compromises circulation. Application and removal should be carried out by trained healthcare staff.
