Description
A Velpeau bandage immobilises the shoulder and arm by resting the arm against the body with the elbow flexed and strapping it in place. Unlike a simple sling, which only carries the arm, it locks the limb to the torso and also blocks rotation at the shoulder joint — which is why doctors choose it for shoulder dislocations and fractures. How long it is worn and how tightly it is fastened depend on the treatment and should be set by your doctor. It is made in one size, and the adjustable straps let it fit a range of builds. If your hand goes numb or changes colour after fitting, loosen the straps. This is the adult product; a separate paediatric Velpeau bandage is made for children. During longer periods of immobilisation, follow the movement programme your doctor recommends so the shoulder does not stiffen.
