Description
The Denis Browne bar is used in the bracing phase of congenital clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) treatment, after casting. It links the two special boots at a set angle and width; the aim is to hold the corrected foot position and prevent the deformity returning. On this model the mechanism at each end of the bar allows inward and outward rotation to be set, and the length opens out to 60 cm — so it can be readjusted to the child's shoulder width as they grow, without buying a new bar at every review. The bar screws onto Denis Browne boots, which are supplied separately. Angle and width must be set by the treating doctor or orthotist; do not alter them yourself. The total duration and the daily hours of wear depend on the treatment protocol, and consistent wear at this stage is the single biggest factor in the outcome. Check the screws for tightness and the fit of the boots on the feet at regular intervals.
