Description
A quad cane covers the middle ground where a single-point cane is no longer enough but a walking frame still feels excessive. The wide four-legged base lets the cane stand up on its own, which means it does not fall over when the user lets go to hold something or reach for an object — bending down to pick up a dropped cane is itself a risk for someone with balance problems. The wide base also allows more weight to be transferred onto the support. The trade-off is that all four feet must meet the ground together, which makes quad canes harder to use than single-point canes on stairs and on sloping or uneven surfaces. Set the height so the handle reaches the wrist crease with the person standing upright. Check regularly that all four rubber tips are intact and wearing evenly; a single worn tip tilts the cane to one side and undermines the stability it exists to provide.
