Description
Merocel nasal packing is a polyvinyl acetal (PVA) sponge used to fill the nasal cavity after intranasal surgery and in epistaxis. It arrives dry and compressed; once in place it absorbs blood and secretions, expands, and applies pressure spread evenly across the walls of the cavity — that expansion is what produces the packing effect. The sponge's pores are fully open with no dead-end pockets to trap residue, and the material holds up to 21 times its own weight in fluid. The 400402 is the 8 cm standard length in the plain configuration, without an airway channel; with bilateral packing the patient breathes through the mouth, which is not an issue for unilateral use. Where a patent nasal airway must be kept, choose the 400410 version with an airway channel instead. It is single use, and removal should be carried out by a clinician.
