Description
Body fat scales estimate body composition by passing a very weak current through the feet and measuring the resistance it meets; fat, muscle and water conduct differently, which lets the scale display readings beyond weight alone. This is an estimate rather than a clinical measurement: the values shift with the time of day, how much you have drunk, whether you have just eaten and how moist the skin of your feet is. For that reason the trend across measurements taken under the same conditions — morning, before eating, barefoot — is far more useful than the absolute figure from any single reading. Feet must be dry for the measurement, and the scale needs a flat, hard floor; on carpet both the weight and the analysis go astray. If you have a pacemaker or a similar implant, ask your doctor before using the body-analysis function, and use the device as a plain weighing scale in the meantime.
