Description
The footguard AFO is a resting orthosis that keeps the ankle in the correct position in bedbound patients. It holds the ankle at 90 degrees, which is why it is used to stop the foot dropping and losing its position during long periods in bed. The attached T-bar prevents the foot rolling inwards or outwards — a control that a plain splint cannot provide. The thermoplastic shell supplies the necessary rigidity while the terry cloth lining softens the surface against the skin and helps reduce pressure points. Small, medium and large sizes are available and supplied by shoe size, so state your size when ordering. It is used on a doctor's recommendation. Check regularly for redness around the heel and ankle. If dorsiflexion support is needed during walking instead, a reflex AFO is the more suitable model.
