Description
An oxygen mask delivers the flow from an oxygen source to the patient by covering both nose and mouth. It can be used at higher flow rates than a nasal cannula and is more effective in patients who breathe through the mouth; on the other hand it has to be removed for speaking and eating, so it is less practical than a cannula for continuous wear. The mask is made from medical grade PVC and its standard connector fits directly onto common humidifier bottles and flowmeters. The tubing has a channelled bore built to resist kinking and crushing, so the flow is not interrupted when the patient rolls onto it or it gets trapped — the most common problem in home oxygen use. The product comes in two sizes, adult and paediatric; a mask that does not match the face leaks at the edges and the delivered oxygen concentration falls, so choosing the right size matters. Masks are for single patient use and should be replaced when soiled or when the strap loosens. Keep the flow rate at the value set by the doctor.
